Creating Opportunities During a Pandemic

It's hard to write about opportunities during a pandemic while people are dying all around the world from it. For those who are sick, or have lost loved ones, this time will leave an indelible mark. However, for those who have not been physically harmed by the virus, it has led to some remarkable changes.


One of the most fascinating things I've noticed about the pandemic that lurks on every street corner is the speed in which business has adapted. Within days of being told by one client that they were pausing their marketing activities, they called back, ordering a new batch of blogs talking about their role in the new COVID-19 world.


Clients have asked for complete COVID-19 campaigns. One needed a full package including a press release, blogs, video scripts, a one pager, social media posts and more, as they try to teach their clients how to use their product during the coronavirus.


I've talked to clients as they outline the new approach they are taking for the duration of this pandemic. They don't know how long it will last, but they are preparing as if it may last for months, even years. One told me that the online shift we expected to see in 2025 is simply moved five years earlier by coronavirus.


The upshot is that they are moving full speed ahead toward a reality where in-store retail experiences are simply lead-gen activities for online sales. One manufacturer told me his stores won't ever sell their products. They are simply a showroom with an Internet store that will deliver his products to customers within 3 days of being ordered, perfect for the type of merchandise he sells.


Retailers that aren't moving full speed ahead to develop their web presence and delivery model will find themselves stagnant during the remainder of the pandemic, and staggering behind when the world's economies are reopened. Every business, even local bakeries, will need to reimagine their business model. For those that do, this time can create a real opportunity. For those that don't, they may look back at this time period as a lost opportunity.
